The GNFAC and the Friends of GNFAC teach a variety of avalanche safety classes across our advisory area in Southwest Montana, the Island Park area of Idaho, and beyond. Our goal is to save lives by providing avalanche education and information, and avalanche awareness classes and outreach are a key component in reaching this goal.

Friends of GNFAC courses meet requirements outlined for awareness programs as outlined by the American Avalanche Association. For more information about American Avalanche guidelines https://www.americanavalancheassociation.org/education-overview .

Common Class types:

  • 1 hour Awareness – non motorized/ human powered ( skiers, snowboarders, climbers, hikers, hunters etc.) or motorized specific. 
  • Specialty awareness talks for groups ( SAR, workplaces, etc)
  • Companion Rescue Clinics
  • Avalanche Fundamentals with Field Course for human powered/ non-motorized and motorized users
  • Elementary, Middle, and High School Student Awareness Classes, these can include Avalanche Demo board, Know Before You Go video & Lecture, Avalanche Rescue basics with a Mobile Beacon Park, and Backcountry Preparedness.
